Mark Twain | The Awful German Language (Fonts by Jonathan Hoefler)

Mark Twain on the awful German language. As a
fifteen-year-old, Samuel Langhorne Clemens
tried to learn German, but failed because of German
grammar, which confused him with the four
grammatical cases, the use of upper and lower case
letters, and especially the use of the neuter
person. During a trip to Germany, his youthful reser-
vations were severely tested and confirmed:
things turned out worse than he had expected.
