Afghan security forces flee without a fight as more districts fall to the Taliban

The advance of Taliban forces through northern Afghanistan has continued to gain momentum with the capture of several districts from fleeing Afghan forces. More than 300 Afghan military personnel have fled Badakhshan province across the border into neighbouring Tajikistan, according to a July 4, 2021, statement from Tajikistan’s State Committee for National Security. Taliban insurgents now control roughly a third of all 421 districts and district centers in Afghanistan. With the final withdrawal of US and Nato troops from Afghanistan imminent, direct foreign intervention in the country is ending after nearly 20 years.
