“And I was like - do they even like go here?" On the functions and stereotypes of 'like'

Little words like 'like', 'I mean' and 'you know' - discourse markers - are frequently criticised and dismissed as being empty fillers. In this video we discuss the work of UWE veteran Dr Kate Beeching on the important linguistic work which these words carry out. We explore corpus evidence of their usages and there's a brief task to explore the functions of 'like'.
