Nissan 350Z Gutting Guide (2,700lbs)

The 350Z make a great track car; the suspension design, brakes, and engine are all a huge upgrade over the earlier S chassis and Z chassis. The main disadvantage to the Z chassis is the weight, and while the 350Z does weigh less than the Z32, it weighs much more than the S14. It also weight more than it's rivals of the time: S2000, RX8, and the Boxster S. While the car did make up for this with more power, losing weight on these cars is a great way to improve ever aspect of performance: acceleration, braking, and handling.
Reducing weight on these cars once they're a track only vehicle is pretty simple; just remember, the priority is to remove weight from the front half of the car. The car already has a 53% front bias; so, removing as much weight as possible from the front of the car should be the focus. I have specific videos on gutting larger items on the car like the doors, hood, hatch, dash, and relocating the battery. The only real tips I have are...
1. definitely remove the speaker bulkhead behind the seats; it's worthless in a caged car
2. keep the AC controls or you can't get your car tuned
The rest of the process is pretty straight forward. In the end, my car weighs just a tick over 2,700lbs with a half tank of fuel, normal battery, and 53/47 weight distribution.
For the future, some weight will be added in the form of a cage and a few other safety items, but I will also be upgrading the battery, further stripping the wiring harness, and replacing several panels with fiberglass. I also plan to push the driver seat, engine, and transmission back 8-12 inches to help that weight distribution.
