Pakistan Introduces Medicine Tracking | Lahore | Hamza Chaudhry | Pakistan Connect

Pakistan's federal cabinet has approved the nationwide implementation of a Track and Trace System for pharmaceutical products in a major step toward eliminating counterfeit and substandard medicines from the market. The initiative includes amendments to the Dr*g Labeling and Packing Rules, introducing a digital mechanism that will enable medicines to be tracked and verified throughout the supply chain, from manufacturing and import to distribution and retail sale.

Under the new framework, all pharmaceutical manufacturers and importers will be required to place standardized 2D barcodes on medicine packaging. Officials say the system will help regulators monitor products at every stage and swiftly identify counterfeit or substandard medicines in circulation.

According to the Ministry of Health, the initiative will make every medicine sold in Pakistan digitally traceable and verifiable for the first time. Consumers will also be able to check key information, including authenticity, expiry dates, and approved prices, helping them make informed healthcare decisions.

The move is part of broader efforts to strengthen drug safety standards and enhance oversight of the pharmaceutical sector across the country.
