Smilodon, better known as the saber-toothed tiger. Despite the nickname, smilodon wasn’t actually a tiger at all. It belonged to a completely different branch of the cat family that has no living equivalent today. Unlike the sleek big cats we know now, smilodon was heavily built. Massive forelimbs, thick neck and shoulders, short, powerful body, enormous upper canine teeth reaching up to 20 cm (8 inches). Its scientific name literally means “scalpel tooth,” a perfect description for its deadly fangs.

The most iconic feature of smilodon was, of course, its terrifying canines. Its jaws could open to an astonishing: 90 Degress!
That’s far wider than modern big cats, allowing the sabers to slash deeply into prey. But these teeth weren’t made for crushing bone—they were surprisingly fragile and designed for precision killing.

Scientists believe smilodon likely ambushed prey from close range, used its powerful arms to pin animals down, delivered a deadly throat or neck bite.
Smilodon lived during the pleistocene epoch, roaming north and south america from around 2.5 million years ago until roughly 8,200 years ago.

Smilodon lived in a world filled with massive ice age animals: bison, giant ground sloths, horses, young mastodons. Rather than chasing prey over long distances, it was likely an ambush predator, hiding in grasslands or wooded areas before launching explosive attacks.
