Edge Case Thinking: Engineering for Vibe Coders

Most bugs are not caused by bad code. They are caused by assumptions you did not know you were making.

When we design systems, we usually focus on the happy path. Valid input, correct order, everything online, everything working. And that is fine for a demo.

But production systems fail at the edges. Empty results. Duplicate events. Things arriving late or out of order. Partial failures.

Edge case thinking is not about being paranoid. It is about identifying which assumptions actually matter and deciding what should happen when they break.

If you do this before you start coding, something interesting happens. The system gets simpler. Failure behavior becomes clearer. And you stop patching bugs after launch with layers of conditionals.

Edge case thinking is not extra work. It is how you avoid accidental complexity later.

If you want your systems to survive reality, you have to design for it.
