BT Sustainability Summit 2025 | Dr. J R Bhatt: India’s Historical Emissions Are Minimal

At the BT India’s Most Sustainable Companies Summit & Awards 2025, Dr. J R Bhatt, Distinguished Fellow at RIS, emphasized the importance of science-backed discourse in climate diplomacy. Citing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Sixth Assessment Report, he pointed out that from 1850 to 2019, the entire South Asia region—including India, home to 24% of the global population—contributed only 4% of cumulative global emissions. Dr. Bhatt urged that while India must act on climate change, it’s vital to recognize its historically minimal role in causing it, advocating for fair and equitable global responsibilities in climate negotiations.
