🩺 Anti-Reflux Surgery: Stop Acid Reflux! #shorts #preop #patienteducation Pt. 3
PreOp® Patient Education - https://PreOp.com
Acid reflux disease is characterized by the stomach's contents flowing back into the esophagus, leading to discomfort and symptoms like heartburn, difficulty swallowing, chest pain, and belching. This condition often worsens at night. A common cause of acid reflux disease is a hiatal hernia, alongside other factors like pregnancy, ulcers, or tumors in the esophagus. Notably, about half of severe reflux disease patients have a hiatal hernia.
Surgical Procedure:
Anti-reflux surgery aims to reinforce the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) to prevent acid reflux. The process begins with anesthetic administration followed by a small incision above the umbilicus. The abdomen is then inflated with carbon dioxide for better visibility and accessibility. The laparoscopic procedure involves multiple small incisions to insert the laparoscope and surgical instruments.
The surgeon starts by detaching the tissue connecting the liver and stomach and dividing the arteries to the stomach top. After freeing the stomach from the spleen, the upper stomach portion is wrapped around the esophagus and sutured into place. A rubber tube may be placed in the esophagus during the procedure to prevent the wrap from being too tight. Post-procedure, all instruments are withdrawn, the incisions are sutured or stapled, and sterile dressings are applied.
Important Note:
This video serves as an educational tool to understand the anti-reflux surgical procedure. It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, discussion, or decision-making with your physician.
Bullet Points:
Acid reflux causes discomfort with symptoms like heartburn and chest pain.
Commonly linked to hiatal hernia, pregnancy, ulcers, or esophageal tumors.
Surgery reinforces the LES to prevent reflux.
Involves small incisions, abdomen inflation, and laparoscopic technique.
Upper stomach wrapped around esophagus, securing with sutures.
Rubber tube placement to maintain appropriate wrap tightness.
The procedure concludes with suturing incisions and applying dressings.
