Nylon Synthesis
A classic science demonstration of two-component polymerization, nylon 66 (also known as "nylon 6,6") is pulled from the interface of two solutions: Hexamethyldiamine in 0.5M sodium hydroxide solution is the lower layer, and adipoyl chloride in cyclohexane is the upper layer. The two compounds react at the interface, making a polymer that can be pulled out as a thread that keeps forming until one or both of the solutions are depleted. Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nylon for the creative—and ultimately tragic—Harvard connection.
