#1: In Ghent, Marie and Filip tell me everything about tally.so

In this episode of No-Code World Radio, I travel to Belgium, Netherlands, and Germany to meet interesting people in the No-Code space. In Ghent, Belgium, I interview Marie and Philip, the co-founders of Tally.so, a no-code form builder. They started Tally about a year ago, but their journey began with the idea of Hotspot, a marketplace for hotels and travel influencers. Eventually, they decided to build the product. They used Google Forms initially but were dissatisfied with its appearance, which led them to create a landing page using Squarespace. When Philippe left his previous startup, Delta, he dedicated his time to building Tali. They spent time in Lanzarote to work on the product and eventually quit their jobs to embrace the digital nomad lifestyle in early 2020.

However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they had to change their plans and redirect their focus. They brainstormed new ideas and eventually came up with the concept for a form builder, inspired by a previous project Philip had worked on called Tally. They identified a gap in the market between Google Forms and Typeform and aimed to create a visually appealing and fun-to-use form builder. They gathered feedback from friends and individuals familiar with form builders to improve Tally. Although initially built for startup founders and agencies, they later realized it could be categorized as a no-code tool.

The biggest use cases for Tally turned out to be quite diverse, ranging from contact forms and customer satisfaction surveys to internal processes for steel companies and story creation through technical storytelling. They have seen a wide variety of applications and have even gained popularity in South Korea due to the success of Notion, which inspired Tally. They grew their user base by reaching out to people who upvoted similar tools on Product Hunt and built a small but engaged community.

Their roadmap includes opening up their API to allow users to create and manage forms programmatically, as well as creating a feature that allows users to perform API tasks without coding. They also plan to focus on customization options to make the platform more personalized and integrate capabilities such as custom domains and CSS script injection. They believe in the potential of the no-code movement and the growth of the community, especially in Belgium and France.

They discuss the importance of educating people about these tools and the potential for growth in different markets. They note the growth of the no-code community in Belgium, particularly in Brussels and French-speaking regions. They also talk about the tech presence in Ghent and the impact of the pandemic on the meetup scene. They share recommendations for visitors to Ghent and express their excitement for the next podcast episode in Amsterdam.
