Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first senior goal in professional football yesterday (October 7th).
The goal came to Sporting de Lisboa and, as Record recalls , “The Portuguese international, then 17 years old, took the ball, dribbled two opponents and when João Ricardo left the goal, he elbowed him.
“In the celebrations, Ronaldo took off his shirt, as he scored 2-0 against Moreirense, in Alvalade [Sporting Lisbon stadium].
“The Portuguese striker scored twice in the game (which ended 3-0) that went down in history.”
Fast forward 20 years, the legend added 697 more goals to that total, soon reaching the magic 700, a number never reached before and a record that will likely stand for many years to come.
The birthday passed with a groan, the day before having flustered his lines as his teammates tried to mount him many times to try and cap the occasion with that elusive 700th goal. It was not to be.
It seems like just a few weeks ago everyone was talking about how Ronaldo has kept himself so fit that he has the body of a 30 year old player, that he should be able to play at the top level at 40 and so on. Now, after a bad start to the season, it feels like the beginning of the end. For some, it feels like the end of the end.
How sad it was to see his humiliation go public demanding a transfer to a Champions League club, only to find that no one wanted him.
This must not be the end. This cannot be the final chapter of this 20-year career. Ronaldo deserves to go out in flames of glory.
And deep down, it seems that there is still life in the old dog, and that everyone is discarding him too soon.
Yes, he missed a yard of pace and struggled to find the back of the net this season. But that could be about form and lack of proper preseason, at least in part, as much as it is about his age.
He's had to reinvent himself before, when dribbling and passing gave way to the energy-conserving predator. Perhaps all that is needed now is another adjustment, to a more Benzema style of play, a center forward who blends power, cunning, aggression and vision rather than relying on pace and timing.
Whether at United or elsewhere, that swan song has to come and United must do whatever it takes to try to help him sing it.
