Scott Dixon's 2018 historic 5th IndyCar Championship
At the final race of the 2018 season, the IndyCar Grand Prix of Sonoma, Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma CA, Ryan Hunter-Reay of Dallas, Texas was the first driver to cross the finish line, but his second win of 2018 was eclipsed and virtually ignored by the news media because of the lifetime achievement of the driver who came in second.
In 1967, A. J. Foyt of Houston, Texas became the first driver to win a 5th Championship in the IndyCar Racing sport. The following year Sears Point Raceway hosted its first event, and in 1969 began hosting IndyCar racing. Sunday, September 16, 2018, Sears Point, now known as Sonoma Raceway, was the track on which Scott Dixon of New Zealand became the second and only other driver to win a 5th IndyCar Championship.
With an 18-year history driving for Chip Ganassi, Scott has a few more years to chase Foyt's record of 7 Championships, but he is breathing rarefied air, knowing that he is the only driver in his lifetime to win 5, due to the fact that he is 38, and it has been 51 years since anyone did what he has done.
As historic as this event is, I must confess that my decision to post this video was driven by admiration of Scott's wife, Emma. I have observed her unreserved support for him at every race where the TV cameras recorded her, and at this history-making event she was literally wild with excitement for his achievement. Early in Scott's first interview, he expressed his appreciation for her support, in a manner that made me somewhat misty-eyed. I posted this primarily to preserve that precious husband-wife moment. I normally cheer for Chevrolet, Penske and Josef Newgarden, but today I cheer for Mr. & Mrs. Dixon. Congratulations, you two - you are awesome!
