Before I got into kart racing, I was a motorcycle rider for most of my life. I've had several bikes in my lifetime; one of my most memorable was my 1999 Honda XR600R. As a kid, I used to watch Johnny Campbell race this bike in the SCORE International Baja 1000 & Baja 500, as well as the Best In The Desert series races against the factory Kawasaki KX500s piloted by riders like Danny Hamel, Larry Roeseler & Ty Davis.

Scott Summers also made this bike popular on the east coast, winning several GNCC championships during his career on the big XR.

Team Honda ran these bored out these bikes to 628cc, making the factory desert machines XR628Rs. After owning the bike for a couple of years, I bored mine out to the same displacement. In addition, I had all of the basic desert modifications (big fuel tank & steering stabilizer) as well as a dual sport kit from Baja Designs.

This bike was extremely reliable, comfortable, and for what it was, it ran strong. It would keep my dad's XR650R honest. The only downside was that it was archaic at this time, being overshadowed by the performance of the modern 450s. Still, I have fond memories of this bike, and it was kind of a dream come true to be able to own one.
