Carnivals vs. Columns: Protest Humor vs. Classical Civic Architecture

What story are we telling about power in American cities when citizens go carnival, and government goes classical? In the street, people stylize costumes and spectacle—or, “tactical frivolity”—to make democracy visible and open to everyone. At the same time, federal policies push for one official, classical style—neat, stern, European—to signal who really “belongs.” This episode asks: Who gets to script civic space—the people or politicians?

We trace a line from inflatable babies and chicken…to Doryphoros…to Frank Lloyd Wright, Case Study Houses, Pop Art, Frank Gehry and Claes Oldenburg, and Venturi & Scott Brown, to show how American design has actually been plural, local, funny, improvised—and democratic.

You’ll learn:
- What “tactical frivolity” is and why playful protest works
- How humor undercuts authoritarian or intimidation-based politics
- Why mandating classical civic architecture is about signaling, not history
- How classical forms (like Doryphoros) encode ideas about the ideal body and “heritage”
- The difference between imported classicism and actually American design languages (Prairie School, mid-century modern, Pop, roadside architecture)
- How Venturi & Scott Brown’s “decorated shed” explains everyday U.S. streetscapes
- Why plural, remixable styles are better suited to a democratic, diverse nation
- How street theater and costumes make public space more inclusive

The big takeaway: both carnivals and columns shape who belongs in America.
