How to Tell Your Story as an Applicant to Med School | Dr. Ryan Gray at University of Florida
Getting into medical school is not just about your GPA and MCAT score. You need to be able to tell your story. That's what I address in this talk, which I gave to the AMSA Premed Club at my alma mater, University of Florida.
If you enjoy this talk, be sure to check out all my podcasts at http://premedpodcasts.com.
Here are some of the more specific topics covered in the talk:
• The truth behind low medical school acceptance rates.
• Why you don't have to be a genius to finish medical school.
• The importance of having a community of premeds to collaborate with.
• How the struggles you go through will help you be a better physician.
• Why admissions committees want to see that you've overcome hardship.
• Why telling your story is KEY to med school admissions.
• What to focus on when getting clinical experience (it's not just about racking up hours).
• The story of how I got caught cheating in my chemistry lab.
• What your goal should REALLY be in the med school interview.
• Why I got rejected from med school, and how I fixed it on my second try.
• Whether you should talk about mental illness in your application, and how to do it.
• Paid vs volunteer clinical experience.
• How to show medical schools you've learned from mistakes in your past.
One of the big takeaways from this talk is that, if you want to be a physician, you can do it. I talk to so many students who think their medical career is over because they got caught drinking, they got caught cheating, or they got too many W's, C's, or F's.
No matter what happens on this journey, fix your mistakes and keep pushing forward.
