Family-Engaged Case Planning in Youth Probation

The Annie E. Casey Foundation hosted a one-hour webinar that introduced family-engaged case planning to juvenile justice agencies and their partners. Family-engaged case planning is a new model for the initial stage of the juvenile probation process, when probation officers formulate case plans in close collaboration with young people and their families. This approach — and the Foundation’s larger vision for transforming juvenile probation — better aligns with research on youth development and how to best support behavior change and growth in young people. The presenters discussed what family-engaged case planning is, why it is necessary to transform probation and how it departs from standard juvenile probation practice. Panelists include:

● Ana Bermudez, commissioner of the New York City Department of Probation;
● Steve Bishop, associate director for probation and system transformation with the Annie E. Casey Foundation;
● Jeannette Bocanegra-Simon, executive director of Justice for Families; and
● Miracle Teo, youth ambassador of the Santa Clara Juvenile Probation Department.
