Rare 'Mini-Moon' Explodes Over Australia (Why It Matters)
Picture this: it’s late winter in South Australia, and you’re stargazing. You look up, and see something: a line of debris moving much slower than most meteors. This is something unique: what scientists call a mini-moon.
For nearly 100 years, astronomers theorized they existed. Today, we've found just three. Current estimates suggest 0.1% of all meteorites that hit Earth are mini-moons, meaning they've orbited in the Earth-Moon system prior to impact. We also think capture of these objects occurs mainly at Lagrange points L1 and L2.
The explosion discussed in this video, which happened in 2016, is one of the first of its kind to be observed. Closer study of this phenomenon may bring us advancements in commercial asteroid mining and astronomy.
