Lago di Braies sits at the end of a dead-end road deep in the Italian Dolomites, surrounded by peaks on every side. The water is an impossible shade of green, and at the shore there's a small wooden boathouse with red rowboats you can take out onto the lake.

The Dolomites are a UNESCO World Heritage Site in northern Italy, and Lago di Braies is one of their most stunning hidden corners. A 3.6 km trail circles the entire lake with the mountains rising straight above you the whole way around. The lake sits at nearly 5,000 feet of elevation, which is part of what keeps the water that color.

Most people fly to Italy and never make it this far north. This is what they miss.
