Freight Carts Weighing 17,500 Pounds Detach & Crash Into Parked Embraer 175
At 11:42 am on September 6, 2020, three Lufthansa freight dollies in a train of five detached from the previous two while being pulled abeam Gate E-125 at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The detached dollies, all fully loaded with freight pallets, rolled into Cargo 5 and struck a SkyWest-owned Embraer 175, registration N178SY, which was parked at Cargo 5 Line 1. The dollies were owned by Swissport and were being used by WFS without Swissport's knowledge, for the Lufthansa operation.
The total collective weight of the three detached dollies was estimated at approximately 17,500 pounds, based on the labeling of the freight and the tare weight of the dollies.
The aircraft was struck from behind the left wing at the wing root. The force of the strike was sufficient to jostle the aircraft and move it approximately one foot to the right. The left main landing gear was struck, and the inner tire was punctured and heavily damaged by the tongue of the first dolly. The left main landing gear door also incurred damage, along with the side of the fuselage where the cargo pallet came to rest, which incurred scuffs. The aircraft, shifted in position, was initially forced tightly onto the wheel chock on its right main landing gear; the chock was distorted from the pressure of the aircraft's weight.
