Like a Prayer - Madonna

Madonna wrote the song with her longtime collaborator, Patrick Leonard, for her same titled 1989 album, Like a Prayer. At 30-years old, Madonna was at a crossroads in her life, she wanted her music to speak to her fanbase who were also growing up into adulthood and wanted her music to dictate and reflect the times. And, Madonna looked through her personal journals and diaries to choose topics to share with the general public. Madonna said, “What was it I wanted to say? I wanted the album to speak to things on my mind. It was a complex time in my life.”
Along with Patrick Leonard, she wrote, “Like a Prayer”, in about three hours. Leonard was uncomfortable with some of the lyrics and innuendoes, but Madonna refused to change the lines.

Out of the darkness appears the Light. It is up to us to seek and find it. First within, then without. Madonna made a career of being controversial, and despite its spiritual and religious overtones, this song retained its innuendoes and controversial undertones. Madonna’s original video for “Like a Prayer,” was protested and condemned at blasphemous. The protests led to Pepsi later cancelled their campaign with it after she appeared in a commercial performing the song.
The gospel vocals were recorded by The Andrae Crouch Choir. The intro is a guitar recording from Prince, who Madonna had asked to contribute to the track.
It topped charts in the US and UK, as well as around the world, selling over 5-millions copies worldwide and became an all-time best-selling single.
