Gimmelwald, a small picturesque alpine village in the Bernese Oberland at asl 1367 m (4485 ft), above the famous Lauterbrunnen valley and overlooking the UNESCO world heritage area Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn. The unspoilt, pedestrian, alpine village lies in the heart of the Swiss alps perched high on the edge of a cliff and embraced by Mother Nature herself. It is one of the last car-free villages in Switzerland. Chalets decorated with flowers, a cheese storehouse in the middle of the village, cattle grazing around: Gimmelwald is like something out of a fairy tale.
The arrival to this village is spectacular, giving you butterflies in your tummy as the aerial cable car rises from Stechelberg along the cliff walls as you pass magnificent Murren waterfalls.
Gimmelwald is accessible only by cable car (or by hiking). You can reach Stechelberg cable car station by the public transport system or with your car. The cable car runs every day from 6am to 11.45pm and takes only 5 minutes to Gimmelwald.
