Dr. Victoria Coates is senior director for the Middle East at the US National Security Council. Coates formerly served as national security advisor to Senator Ted Cruz in his 2016 presidential campaign. She also served as consulting curator at the Cleveland Museum of Art from 2010 to 2013. She is the author of David’s Sling: A History of Democracy in Ten Works of Art. Coates received her PhD in art history from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Jonathan Fulton is an assistant professor of political science in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Zayed University, in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He received his PhD in international relations from the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom, where his dissertation focused on China’s relations with the Gulf Cooperation Council member states. He has written widely on China-Middle East relations for both academic and popular publications. He is the author of China’s Relations with the Gulf Monarchies and co-editor of External Power and the Gulf Monarchies.
Dr. Degang Sun is a visiting scholar at Harvard University. He is also professor and deputy director of the Middle East Studies Institute of Shanghai International Studies University and the editor-in-chief of the Asian Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies. He was a senior associate member at St. Antony’s College at Oxford University from 2012-2013, and an academic visitor to Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies (2012-2013), Denver University (2007-2008), and Hong Kong University (2004-2005).
Mr. William F. Wechsler is director of Middle East Programs at the Atlantic Council and director of the Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East. Mr. Wechsler’s most recent government position was Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Combatting Terrorism. Previously, Mr. Wechsler served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Counternarcotics and Global Threats, where he directed a budget of $1.6 billion and oversaw military and civilian programs around the globe. During the Clinton Administration, Mr. Wechsler served as Special Advisor to the Secretary of the Treasury, where he helped establish the legal regime and policies we use to impose foreign sanctions and combat money laundering. He had previously served as Director for Transnational Threats on the National Security Council staff, and prior to that was a Special Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Mr. Wechsler is a graduate of Cornell University and received an MA from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs.
