The Great Library of Alexandria was once the most significant repository of knowledge in the ancient world. Sadly, it's been gone for nearly 2000 years.
Back in the 2nd century BC, the creation of the Great Library of Alexandria was basically like the creation of the Internet. It was originally commissioned by Ptolemy I, then was the center of learning and knowledge for 300 years. People from all over the world would come to the library to read from its thousands of books, to gain wisdom, and congregate. The administrators of the library were trying to hold all written knowledge in existence inside the library's walls. It had at least 700,000 books according to ancient history scholar Garret Ryan. That's a phenomenal number of books, especially considering the library was active back in 200 BC!
