Dahlias / Cocoxochitl: Lifting, Cleaning, Dividing, and Storing

This is how we do it! We are in the Philadelphia, PA area and these methods work for us. I have been growing dahlias for seven years, starting with a couple hundred plants at Roughwood Seed Collection, and now with around 350 plants at Truelove Seeds for cut flowers, seed saving, and tuber sales. We also taste test our varieties that have larger, more productive tubers. Dahlias are an Aztec plant known as Cocoxochitl in Nahuatl, and were originally used for food. Some people in Mexico still eat them!

Please let us know how you do it differently in the comments. I highly suggest joining the Facebook group "Dahlias" if you are on that platform. That group has lots of helpful people with much longer track records than me. Also, check in with your local dahlia growers and dahlia clubs for advice on your particular climate with its particular humidity and temperature ranges.

Thank you to Zoe, Hannah, and Debbie for helping to film!
