"In December, the Como show moved to a location of a different sort. With the Cuban Missile Crisis dominating the news during the autumn of 1962, the United States had a significant body of troops stationed at the Guantanamo Naval Base in Cuba American troops had remained there despite the Cuban revolution in 1959. Arriving on December 5, Como and an cight-member troupe gave ten shows for the sailors over the next three days, as well as recording segments of the weekly show for TV. The show echoed the front-line performances that show biz stars had delivered during World War II and in Korea. Ray Charles, who accompanied Como on the trip, recalled "gun-toting Cubans" surrounding them at every opportunity."
