ABOUT THIS VIDEO
In this video, I share simple tips to help you feel more confident and have better conversations when you speak with native English speakers.
I lived in Argentina for 5 years and had to speak Spanish every day, so I know how intimidating it can be to speak a foreign language.
The good news is that you can learn to relax and have enjoyable conversations!
Here are the tips I mention in the video:
1. Focus on the other person. Don't let yourself get distracted by other things you have to do. And don't think about your English (how good or bad it is) while you are speaking. Just be present and enjoy the moment!
2. Prepare for conversations before they happen! If you KNOW that you are going to meet with someone, think of questions in advance that you can ask. Plan topics to discuss. This will take a lot of pressure off of you when it's time to speak.
3. Make a list of go-to questions that you can ask to start a conversation with anyone. Memorize these questions so you always have them ready. These are also called "conversation starters" because they help start conversations.
4. Practice active listening and asking questions. When someone shares something, ask a RELEVANT question about what they just said to show you are interested and that you are paying attention. Don't cut people off and share your ideas and stories just because you are excited. Be patient, and wait for the conversation to circle back to you.
5. Share stories! This helps people connect with you and enjoy their time with you. If they say something you can relate to, share a story about a time something similar happened to you.
6. Speak up and don't overthink what you are going to say! Conversations happen so fast! Don't lose your opportunity to share your ideas just because you are worried about your grammar. You are better than you think you are and the more you practice, the better you'll get!
