Remembering Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac - 29 October 1946 to 25 July 2020
Born in Bethnal Green in London England. Peter Green was the founder of Fleetwood Mac and a British Blues icon. By the age of 11 he was teaching himself guitar and by the age 15 he was playing professionally.
Influenced by Hank Marvin and the shadows, Muddy Waters and BB King, he would start his early career playing alongside John Mayall in his band John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers before forming Fleetwood Mac in 1967.
Fleetwood Mac’s self titled 1968 debut album was a raw and ready straight up blues record, a far cry from the commercial pop hits that the band would later release without Green after his departure from the band in 1970.
Although Peter Green's last show with Fleetwood Mac was on 20 May 1970, Green would embark on his own solo career, releasing his first solo album, ‘The End of the Game’ in 1970, followed by In The Skies in 1979.
Green would become such an iconic blues guitarist that he would influence other guitar legends such as Gary Moore and even Joe Perry of Aerosmith.
On July 25th 2020, Peter Green’s family would issue a statement announcing that he passed away peacefully in his sleep at the age of 73.
BB King once commented on Peter Green’s musicianship, saying: “He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats”
Without a doubt a truly sad day for blues music. Peter Green will go down in history as one of the great blues guitar players. His contributions to the British Blues movement will forever be remembered.
