When curiosity feels like criticism at work

A common workplace communication misunderstanding happens when one person’s curiosity feels like a challenge to someone else.

You may be asking a genuine question.
They may hear criticism.
They may be trying to understand.
You may feel defensive.

This is why curiosity at work takes practice. It is not just about asking more questions. It is also about noticing how our questions land, how we interpret others’ questions, and how quickly defensiveness can show up in difficult conversations at work.

Instead of assuming,
“They’re challenging me,”

try asking,
“What might they be trying to understand?”

This small shift can help build workplace trust, improve team communication, and create more respectful conversations.

Curiosity is not always simple, but it can help us slow down before we react.
