Telstra and Optus agree to stop selling phones with Google exclusively pre-installed

Telstra and Optus have agreed to stop selling phones, which have Google exclusively pre-installed on them in response to an ACCC investigation.

“ACCC began looking into Google’s market share when it comes to search engines on mobile phones several years ago,” Sky News Business Reporter Edward Boyd said.

“They published some data this morning showing that Google basically has a monopoly on the search engine market on your mobile.

“One of the reasons they’ve had such a strong hold on the market since 2017 (is) all Android phones basically sold by Telstra or Optus in their retail shops had Google search engine pre-installed on that phone.

“In response to these Android phones having Google search engines on them, the companies Telstra and Optus received some Google advertising benefits.

“The ACCC looked into this, both Telstra and Optus finished selling phones with the Google search engine as the default setting on the 30th of June.”
