Do you need a marine survey? Well, in most places, if you are insuring a boat, or renewing insurance after several years you will need a marine survey. You may also require a survey when purchasing a used boat. In a moment all about how to get and when to avoid expensive and unnecessary surveys. PAUSE Hi, I’m Allan Stokell and this is Grampian Marine, the channel for people who buy, maintain and LOVE old fibreglass boats. Insurance surveys can be performed on land or sea and are usually less expensive as they are less detailed than surveys for sales. After all, the insurance company just wants to make sure the boat exists and probably won’t catch fire or sink. According to Wikipedia:
“A Marine surveyor is a person who conducts inspections, surveys or examinations of marine vessels to assess, monitor and report on their condition and the products on them, as well as inspects damage caused to both vessels and cargo. Marine surveyors also inspect equipment intended for new or existing vessels to ensure compliance with various standards or specifications.” Today we’ll be looking at whether or not you need a marine survey before you buy a used boat. If you find you don’t, then later in the episode I’ll give you info on how to conduct your own survey. Although their fees might be considered expensive a proper marine survey can save you thousands of dollars as well as perhaps the health and safety of you and your crew.
Marine surveys typically include info on the structure, mechanical systems, as well as navigational, safety and radio equipment and the general condition of a vessel. Because the sale of a vessel may be contingent on a successful survey, a marine surveyor holds a prestigious position and is held with much regard in the sailing community. That said, Marine Surveyors are often villainized by some people in the community who believe they are dishonest or provide shoddy surveys that please sellers over buyers. If the purchase of your boat is based purely on their judgment, competence and integrity then you must seek out the best. Marine surveyors unlike doctors (for instance) do not all have the same credentials.

Be certain of a surveyor’s accreditation before you hire. Marine surveyors should be independent from other firms including yacht brokers. Insurance companies cannot require customers to use specific marine surveyors. Every survey must have the following skills: Working knowledge of a ship's electrical & mechanical systems, fundamental understanding of boat design & construction. Ask about errors and omissions and liability insurance. Never hire a marine surveyor without errors and omissions insurance. Yacht and small craft surveyors specialize in inspecting smaller vessels that are most often used for pleasure boating (both power and sail). Now earlier I told you that you may be able to avoid a survey.
There are many ‘depends-ons’ on this but if the seller has a recent survey (often up to five years) your insurance company may accept it. You, however may have to assume that nothing bad has happened to the boat in the last 5 years. If your bank or insurance company does not require a current survey, you can still do your own. Watch for the video link in the ‘i’ in the upper right side. After you watch it, I can send you a free marine survey checklist that covers many of the items a surveyor will look at. If you enjoyed the vid, give me a thumbs up and subscribe and ring the bell to be notified the next time we post. I’m Allan Stokell thank you for watching.
