Mycoplasma Pneumoniae in Children. Walking Pneumoniae. What you Need to know.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a type of bacteria that can cause respiratory infections in children, including pneumonia:
Symptoms
Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, headache, and malaise. They usually develop over 1-3 weeks, but can last for several weeks. Some infected people may have no symptoms.
Transmission
M. pneumoniae is transmitted from person-to-person through respiratory droplets.
Treatment
Most people recover without medicine, but some may need antibiotics and to go to hospital. The drugs of choice are second-generation tetracyclines (doxycycline) and macrolides.
Complications
In children and the elderly, M. pneumoniae can lead to complications such as ARDS, bronchiolitis obliterans, lobar consolidation, lung abscess, necrotizing pneumonitis, pleural effusion, empyema, and respiratory failure.
Outbreaks
Outbreaks of M. pneumoniae tend to last a long time because symptoms like cough and runny nose can stick around for weeks.
M. pneumoniae is the most common cause of pneumonia in children and the second most common cause in adults. It's most common in school-aged children and young adults
