1100 Horsepower Hispano Suiza Carmen Sagrera Design Explained

Hispano-Suiza, a historic Spanish automotive company with a Swiss-inspired name, was founded in 1904. With a 120-year legacy that spans more than just cars, the company has recently introduced a new electric vehicle model.

The brand, established by Marc Birkigt and Damian Mateu in 1904, has a storied history of producing luxury cars, aircraft engines, trucks, and even weapons. However, in recent years, Hispano-Suiza had focused more on the aerospace industry. To revitalize its automotive presence, the company reintroduced its automotive division with the all-electric Hispano Suiza Carmen, unveiled at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show.

To celebrate its 120th anniversary, Hispano-Suiza has now introduced the Sagrera, the third hypercar in the Carmen family. This new model features several design updates, including a distinctive stork-wing-shaped rear spoiler and updated interiors. Equipped with a second-generation 103-kilowatt-hour battery pack, the Sagrera boasts a maximum driving range of up to 480 kilometers (298 miles) on the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure standard.

The Hispano Suiza Sagrera, named after the La Sagrera neighborhood in the company's hometown of Barcelona, Spain, was officially presented at Finca Mas Solers, a picturesque event venue near the city. According to Miguel Suqué, President of Hispano Suiza and great-grandson of Damian Mateu, the Sagrera is "a project with a lot of soul."

Chief Executive Sergio Martinez Campos commented, "With the Sagrera, we are consolidating in style the Carmen range that was born in 2019. This is the year of acceleration in which we are going to conquer key markets for us, such as the United States; we will complete the European homologation, and, of course, it is a year to celebrate our legacy." Consequently, the Hispano Suiza Carmen range will soon be available in America.

The Sagrera's 103-kilowatt-hour battery pack, developed and manufactured entirely at Hispano Suiza's facilities in Montmelo, Barcelona, weighs 612 kilograms (1,349 pounds). The vehicle's curb weight is 1,875 kilograms (4,134 pounds), reflecting the increase from the previous 80-kilowatt-hour pack.

The new battery pack extends the driving range by approximately 100 kilometers. The hypercar also features an improved cooling system and redesigned front vents to enhance functionality and styling. The rear of the vehicle has undergone significant changes, including a new stork-style large spoiler. Inside, the center console and infotainment system are new, and the interior features Alcantara with black and red leather details. The Carmen Sagrera was showcased in a unique Cava Gold livery, marking its first-ever matte finish.

The electric hypercar is powered by four axial-flux permanent magnet motors, each producing 275 horsepower. These motors are connected in series, generating a combined output of 820 kilowatts (1,100 horsepower), allowing the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in just 2.6 seconds. Following its world premiere in Spain, the Hispano Suiza Carmen Sagrera will make its live dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in the United Kingdom in mid-July.
