🌟 Highlights from Today’s Show
🏫 Dr. Chip Jones Joins the Show
Dr. Chip Jones reflects on nearly completing his first year as Superintendent of Prince Edward County Public Schools. He thanks families, teachers, staff, students, the community, the Board of Supervisors, and the school board for their support through the highs and lows of the year.
📈 Getting 1% Better
Chip shares his goal of helping the school division become at least 1% better every day. He says Prince Edward may never be a perfect school division, but it can keep becoming a better one.
🎓 Partnerships with Local Colleges
The conversation highlights Prince Edward’s strong partnerships with Longwood University, Hampden-Sydney College, and Southside Virginia Community College. Chip says students benefit from having those institutions so close, including chances to play games on college fields.
🏗️ Elementary School Construction
Construction and renovations at the elementary school are moving along. The new entrance and drop-off loop are expected to be ready when students return on August 12, with the full project still on track for completion next spring and a full opening for the 2027-2028 school year.
❄️ High School Chiller and Facility Updates
Chip gives an update on the high school’s air conditioning chiller replacement, plus other facility work including a new fence around the football and baseball fields and a new boiler coming to the middle school.
🏀 Honoring Coach Baker and Coach Scott
Prince Edward will hold ceremonies on August 7 and August 8 to honor Coach Baker and Coach Scott by naming the middle school basketball court and the track in their honor. The school division is also collecting memories from the community to share with them and their families.
🎓 Class of 2026 Graduation
Chip talks about the Class of 2026 graduation ceremony, with about 120 graduates. He also mentions eighth-grade, fourth-grade, and pre-K stepping-up ceremonies that helped families celebrate major milestones.
🦅 Freshman Orientation
Prince Edward High School is planning freshman orientation for July 29. Chip says student feedback helped shape the decision, after seniors shared that an orientation would have helped them transition into high school.
🗣️ Student Liaisons to the School Board
The school division will add student liaisons to the school board. Two seniors will serve as representatives, with two juniors as alternates who can move into the senior roles the following year.
🛠️ Student Summer Workers
Students are also working in maintenance and technology over the summer, giving them real-world experience and a look behind the scenes at what keeps the school system running.
📚 Summer Learning and Professional Training
Summer learning, enrichment, and remediation are underway. Staff are also taking part in professional development, including training on social media, investigations, student rights, and what schools can and cannot share publicly.
🌾 Rural Education Conference
Chip talks about attending a rural education conference at JMU and serving on a superintendent panel with leaders from Sussex, Danville, and Nottoway. When asked what he wants to be remembered for, he says he hopes people feel he helped create opportunities they did not have before.
🍎 School Meals and SunBucks
School nutrition coordinator Bruce Davis helped Prince Edward partner with PepsiCo, Amazon, and No Kid Hungry through SunBucks. Four hundred families signed up to receive boxes of meals delivered to their homes through the program.
🥫 Food Pantry Support
Families from the elementary and middle schools also helped with a canned food drive, with donations going to FACES Food Pantry.
