SOLUTIONS with/in/sight: Using Artificial Intelligence to Make Mammography Smarter

Mammography is a critical tool in breast cancer diagnosis, offering powerful visual analysis of complex biological conditions. On April 30, 2019, MIT President Emerita Susan Hockfield and The Boston Globe’s Linda Pizzuti Henry explored new strategies for integrating machine learning algorithms into clinical care. Collaborators Regina Barzilay and Constance Lehman offered insight into the potential of new AI-driven solutions to transform image-based assessments. Barzilay, motivated in part by her own experience with breast cancer, discussed how she uses machine learning tools to improve consistency and accuracy in mammography assessments, while Lehman shared perspectives on the strengths and limitations of current approaches to mammography and elements critical for successful integration of AI discoveries into clinical care. Together, the team offered insight into the future of mammography and shed new light on novel solutions for biomedical challenges.

Speakers:

Regina Barzilay, PhD
Member, Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research at MIT
Delta Electronics Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Member, CSAIL

Constance Lehman, MD, PhD
Director of Breast Imaging and Co-Director, Avon Comprehensive Breast Evaluation Center,
