To the west, Nayarit has a significant share of coastline on the Pacific Ocean. The state is known to tourists for the beach town of San Blas, and the so-called "Riviera Nayarita", as well as for its indigenous Huichol and Cora communities. Besides the mainland, the islands Marias, Isabel, Tres Marietas and Farallón La Peña in the Pacific Ocean are part of its territory.

Home to indigenous peoples such as the Uto-Aztecan Huichol and Cora communities, European colonization of started with visits by Francisco Cortes and Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán in the mid-16th century. Spanish government was made difficult by several indigenous rebellions and the by the inhospitable terrain of the Sierra del Nayar. The last independent Cora comunities were incorporated into Spanish control in 1722. The state is named after the Cora people whose own name for themselves is Náayerite.

Today the economy of the state is based mainly on agriculture, fishing and tourism.
