A clever chord progression is one that sets up a listener’s expectation, and then breaks that expectation in an interesting way. One song that does this well is ‘Along Came Betty’ by Benny Golson.
It plays with two important concepts in Jazz:
1) Guide Tones (the 3rd and 7th of the chord) and by extensions shell voicings; and
2) ii-V7-I Progression (which is the mostly widely used progression in Jazz).
The song creates a pseudo-251 (where it resolves to the 'wrong' chord but in an interesting way) immediately followed by a true-251. This little trick is absolutely brilliant.
