All young girls,irrespective of their background,should study very hard and get a job.Whether they are going for a love marriage or an arranged marriage,they must work for atleast 3-4 years and save money.This money will help them stand on their own legs even after marriage. In case they are not able to work immediately after marriage or delivery,they will get interest from this money and they can take care of their personal expenses.This will give them a lot of confidence in their matrimonial home.The people in the in laws' house will also not take the girl for granted.
I mentioned that all girls irrespective of their background should work because even if the girl is rich and gets married in a rich family,unless she manages her personal expenses on her own, people will say "veetula summa thane irukke" such words.
Girls should never give up their self respect.But that does not mean they have to fight with their in laws.They have to maintain their self respect and also respect their in laws but should also convey the point that she can't be taken for granted.

1. Mother-in-law is not your mother. So, do not expect her to take care of you. But she is also not your enemy. So one should try to build a constructive relationship with mother-in-law. It is very crucial because, in the long run, if you wish to be successful, her support is very important.
2.Building a relationship does not mean being too nice her and doing whatever she asks you to do. Be nice to her but if she tells you something that you are not ok with, then tell her politely that you cannot do it. But if she insists you to do it, do it. Then gradually make her understand you are not comfortable with it. She will understand.
3. Do not picturise your mother-in-law like a villian. Never say bad things about her to your relatives, including your parents. Someday or the other, it will come back to her ears and strain your relationship with her.
4. If your mother-in-law says something that hurts you, just think that she is saying it due to her innocence and lack of awareness. Mostly mother-in-laws are home bound and they don't have exposure to the world. So, we can't expect them to have modern thoughts. Just forgive her. But once again gradually convey the point that things don't work the way she thinks.
5. Regarding household work, try to reach an understanding from the beginning. Talk openly regarding division of work among all the members of the family. If division of work is something unthought of by them, then give them some time. Just try to take small small help in the beginning. Tell people how much you appreciate it. Slowly make the members of the house participate. See what work your mother-in-law will be comfortable with and try asking her help.
6. If your mother-in-law participates in cooking, cutting vegetables, etc., definitely plan the meal at least the previous night. This will avoid her asking you to prepare a lot of dishes the next day.
7. If your in-laws are against you going to work, do not take up a full time job immediately. Then everyday will become very hard to manage. Take up part time jobs and also spend time with the family so that they will understand you are not sacrificing your family for your work. Then, once the child goes to regular school, increase the hours of work. Initially, it does not matter what work you do or how much you earn. All that matters is whether you will continue with your work in the long run.
8. If your mother-in-law takes care of your child when you go to work, try to appreciate and recognise her contribution in a suitable manner. By getting her the gifts she likes or whatever will make her feel that she is doing some constructive thing.
9. Once you establish a relationship with them and if they get to know you will take care of both the family and your work, support will automatically start coming in.
