Saudi Arabia Hosts Ukraine Peace Talks in Bid to Become Global Mediator
Representatives from some 40 countries met in Jeddah over the weekend to discuss a peaceful solution to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The talks were hosted by Saudi Arabia, which managed to use its diplomatic leverage and get BRICS nations such as China and India to attend. But Russia was excluded from the meeting.
The Jeddah talks were held 18 months into the Russia-Ukraine conflict and in the backdrop of a changing international order. Among the points discussed was Zelenskyy's 10-step programme for peace, which includes Russia's withdrawal from Ukrainian territory. Ukraine has hailed China's participation in the Jeddah talks as a diplomatic win, as Beijing hasn't yet spoken out against Russia and continues to maintain close diplomatic relations with the country. The pro-Kiev nations had failed to secure China's presence in the first round of talks hosted by Denmark in June. The next meeting for peace is due in about six weeks. Kremlin has already dismissed the Jeddah talks, calling it a doomed Western attempt.
