What happened before the Big Bang

The Big Bang, the colossal explosion marking the inception of the universe, remains one of the most fascinating subjects in cosmology. A provocative hypothesis suggests that this event may have originated from the tearing of spacetime by a black hole. This concept bridges black hole physics with the birth of the universe, offering a dramatic twist on traditional cosmological theories.

Black holes, regions in space where gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape, are usually associated with the death of massive stars. However, their role might not be confined to cosmic endpoints. Some theoretical physicists propose that the extreme conditions around black holes could lead to phenomena that mirror the conditions of the Big Bang.

The idea stems from the properties of black holes as described by general relativity. According to Einstein’s equations, the singularity at a black hole’s center—where density becomes infinite and known laws of physics cease to function—might resemble the state of the universe at the Big Bang. This singularity is a point where spacetime curves infinitely, and normal understandings of space and time breakdown.

In this framework, a black hole in a pre-existing universe could potentially tear through the fabric of spacetime due to its intense gravitational pull. This tear could then serve as a seed for a new universe, initiating a Big Bang-like event. Such a scenario would align with the concept of a multiverse, where each black hole has the potential to spawn a new universe.

This theory also aligns with the notion of 'cosmic natural selection'. Proposed by Lee Smolin, this theory suggests that universes can evolve through black holes, with each new universe inheriting the laws of physics from its parent universe. Over time, universes that produce more black holes become more common, suggesting a Darwinian evolutionary process at a cosmic scale.
