Screen time in an ADHD house is not what people think it is.
It’s not just “too much iPad.”
It’s not just “set better limits.”
And it’s definitely not as simple as “just turn it off.”
Because if you’ve ever tried to take a screen away from an ADHD kid… you already know.
It’s not a smooth transition.
It’s not a quick “okay, I’m done.”
It’s a full-body, full-brain, what-the-hell-just-happened meltdown.
And for the longest time?
I thought I was doing something wrong.
Too strict.
Too lenient.
Too inconsistent.
Not consistent enough.
Pick a lane, right? 🙃
But here’s what nobody tells you:
ADHD brains don’t just stop things the way we expect them to.
When they’re locked into something that’s fast, stimulating, and dopamine-loaded (hi, screens 👋), their brain isn’t thinking about what’s next.
It’s not preparing to transition.
It’s not easing out.
It’s ALL IN.
So when we come in like:
“Time’s up, turn it off.”
Their brain doesn’t go: “okay cool.”
It goes:
🚨 ABSOLUTE SYSTEM SHUTDOWN 🚨
And then we’re standing there thinking:
“Why is this such a big deal??”
Meanwhile, their brain is basically slamming into a wall at full speed.
And here’s the part that hit me the hardest:
It wasn’t just the screens causing the chaos.
It was what I was doing around them.
How I was ending them.
What I expected their brain to do next.
That’s the part that changed everything for us.
Not removing screens.
Not perfect limits.
Just understanding what was actually happening… and adjusting from there.
I break all of this down (real life, what worked, what didn’t, and what we’re still figuring out) on today’s episode of Chaos & Caffeine.
If screen time battles are running your house right now… this one’s for you.
