QYLD is the Global X Nasdaq 100 Covered Call ETF. This ETF pays an 11.6% dividend yield and pays its dividend monthly! There must be a catch, right?...
How it works - $QYLD sells covered calls on the Nasdaq 100 Index.
- QYLD buys all of the stocks in the Nasdaq 100.
- QYLD then sells ATM (at the money) covered calls 1 month out on index to collect the premium
- Tthe income from options premiums & sale of underlying shares (on exercised options) are returned to QYLD holders as the dividend.
- Rinse and repeat!
But how does QYLD's strategy work in different markets? In a sideways market - QYLD keeps the premium from selling calls with no other action needed. In a bull market, calls get exercised & QYLD ends up selling stock, losing out on any gains above that price. In a bear market QYLD keeps premium from selling the calls, but the shares lose value & the price of QYLD falls.
With QYLD you limit your upside in a rising market, but keep the downside risk in a bear market.
QYLD's expense ratio is 0.6%. Higher than an index fund like VTI or VOO, but lower than other active ETF's.
Because QYLD invests in both stocks and options contracts, QYLD taxes are complicated. QYLD returns will be a mix of short term capital gains, long term capital gains and return of captial for tax purposes.
If you’re going to invest in QYLD, know that you have to be willing to sacrifice almost ANY and ALL price appreciation gains for income. So QYLD may be best suited for retirees, or anyone else looking to sustain themselves off of the income produced by their investments, not someone looking to grow their overall investment portfolio balance.
