Two Post Rotary Lift Install Pt 1

This is one benefit of doing a little 'trading' on the side... The story is in the video, but suffice it to say all I have invested so far in this deluxe hoist is a bit of labor. Well...now I DID have to buy a box of 6 1/4'' x 3/4'' concrete anchors to mount this beast, and a cheap box of plastic shims. These 'two post' lifts are a bit sensitive to install compared to a standard 'rour post'. Rated at 10,000 pounds and being supported by only two posts an incorrect installation can be met with critical failure during a stressed lift. Think about the physics of a stamped beam whose design is to support 'compression' weight being installed at an angle (off plumb). The compression load is now applying force to the beam from a direction other than straight down. The result in an extreme case is bowing, then buckling and then possibly catastrophic collapse....all because of the support columns not being 'plumb' !! Now, is that going to happen right at the full rated load or 5,000 pounds on each column..?? Probably not, but let me present it to you in this fashion.... Chances are if you light a cigarette with a match and smoke it on top of a case of dynamite, it 'probably' would not ignite or explode...right ?? But, would you want to take that chance ?? Its the same thing only different with installing this style of lift incorrectly. Remember P.L.S....? Plumb, Level and Square are the three key words with these stamped steel columns.

Let me clarify...the above is totally my theory and not meant to influence your thinking in any way whatsoever. The mere fact that we are members of the human race affords the luxury of one basic thing: Free Will. Because this is NOT a 'how to' video, you are free to do what you want with yours in any way in which you so decide to do it. But remember don't do it my way just because it looks easy. If you are lucky you will get factory instructions with yours, which is one luxury I didn't have.

One lesson learned the hard way is to be careful with a camera with an autofocusing/telescoping lens while drilling, vacuuming and blowing concrete dust out of holes drilled with a roto-hammer and masonry bit. It wasn't a lesson learned until filming during the second day of the installation. The telescoping portion developed a suspiciously crunchy sound and would bind up repeatedly, then the camera would lock up. I tried compressed air, WD 40, electric contact cleaner, then finished up with a 4 pound double face hammer. I did get it to telescope IN with the hammer, but now it won't even try to come out !! I think maybe my 'love tap' carried a bit too much force. You know they just don't build cameras like they used to......but, I digress.
It would've been nice to have had an extra pair of hands but the four paws and cold wet nose of my shop dog Layla had to suffice. All is good though because she got her snacks on time and I got my lift installation a reasonable distance down the road on the way to completion.

Hopefully you enjoyed the fancy 'two step' moves with the pair of columns, me being the short guy moving the long blue legs across the floor not unlike an eighth grader at his first Sadie Hawkins Day dance.

May I reiterate, this is just an exercise in entertainment, not at all is it intended as an instructional video or a 'how-to' video. You are on your own....just like me. The views and opinions depicted in this video are mine and mine alone and are not supported by any scientific or engineering data generated by any authority that is certified or reliable and are not to be considered as such. The monkey is on your back, so make sure you bring snacks along for YOUR installation project, because like Layla, they need encouragement too. How's that for a disclaimer....
