When you place your finger on a baby’s palm, they automatically grasp it tightly.

When the sole of the foot is touched, the baby’s toes curl downward.

👉These reflexes are important signs of normal neurological development in newborns.

⏳ When do they disappear?
* Palmar grasp reflex usually disappears by 4–6 months of age.
* Plantar grasp reflex usually disappears by around 9–12 months.

As babies grow, these reflexes are gradually replaced by voluntary movements and better motor control.
Around 4–6 months, you may notice your baby:
* bringing hands to the mouth
* reaching and grasping objects
* exploring with their hands more intentionally

This is also why supervised mitten-free time can help babies develop sensory awareness and fine motor skills. 🤍

Why are these reflexes important?
✔️ suggest normal neurological function in newborns
✔️ help assess the integrity of the nervous system
✔️ show normal brain and spinal cord development
✔️ prepare babies for future voluntary grasping and motor skills

✨Persistence of primitive reflexes beyond the expected age may sometimes suggest neurological concerns and should be assessed by your PEDIA 👩🏻‍⚕️💯👌
