Chausson – La chanson bien douce, op. 34, no. 1

Translated text:
'Listen to the sweet song
Who only cries to please you,
She is discreet, she is light:
A thrill of water on moss!

The voice was known to you (and dear?)
But now she is veiled
Like a sorry widow,
Yet still proud,

And in the long folds of his veil,
That throbs in the breeze of autumn,
Hides and shows with a surprised heart,
The truth as a star.

She, the recognized voice, says
That kindness is our life,
That from hatred and envy
Nothing remains, once death comes.

She also speaks of glory
To be simple without further ado
And of golden weddings and tender
Happiness of a peace without victory.

Welcome the voice that persists
In her naive epithaph.
Come on, nothing is better to the soul
Than to make a soul less sad!

She is in pain and passing,
The soul that suffers without anger,
And, as her lesson is clear...
Listen to the wise song.'
