Who am I? I’m Tom, an Orthopaedic and Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. I work with patients pre-operatively before their operation, work with patients on the wards immediately after their knee replacement and continue to rehabilitate individuals until they are physically active and have met their physical goal, whether it be returning to cycling, golf, gardening, tennis, gym or Jigglyball!

It is important to consider throughout this that everyone progresses at different rates (even those who have had both knees replaced simultaneously report each knee heals differently) so don’t worry if you are not hitting the goals just yet! Take your time. If you have any complications with your replaced knee don’t hesitate to contact your doctor or hospital ward where you had the surgery.
A few common questions

How long does it take to get a suitable bend in my replaced knee?

Most individuals with knee replacements will manage to bend their knee to about 125 degrees within 3 months which is enough to do most activity.

What happens if my knee doesn’t bend enough to perform your daily activities?

If your knee range of movement is still poor at 6 weeks after your knee surgery, your surgeon may discuss with you the option of having another minor operation (manipulation under anaesthetic) to improve your range of movement further so it’s important to get it right the first time.

Why does my knee feel so weak after a knee replacement?

After surgery, the muscles surrounding the knee and hip especially the quadriceps muscles at the front of the thigh will actually be weaker than before your surgery. This is due to trauma from the incision, swelling, and something called pain inhibition. Pain inhibition is your body’s natural defence mechanism where because of the high levels of pain in your knee following an operation, the body is thought to instruct your muscles in that area to switch off slightly. This will result in weakness after your operation which will require strengthening so you can perform usual day to day activities.

When should I stop using elbow crutches after my knee replacement?

There is no specific time. You should retain use your crutches, walking sticks or frame until you can walk without a limp, this may be as much as 6 weeks depending how your walking was before your knee replacement.

How long will my knee replacements stay swollen for?

Typically, your knee will swell for three to six months after your knee replacement. Sometimes up to a year!

How long does it take to fully recovery from a knee replacement?
Again, everyone progresses at different rates but on average it takes 3 to 12 months to recover from a total knee replacement, and slightly quicker to recovery from a partial otherwise known as a uni knee replacement.
