Goldsmithing: The Making of 22k Gold Bird Earrings
Part 8 of the making of the Bird Earrings: making the sequins
I documented the making of the Bird Earrings for an Exhibition at Bard after the original pair I made for NOVA:PBS special Treasures of the Earth: Metals. Each pair is one-of-a-kind but inspired by the same concepts of using ancient jewelry making skills and design to make modern treasures. I also utilize a completely new technique, wire mosaic, that I developed after a suggestion by my colleague Michael Ellis. Hope you enjoy! Goldsmithing: The Making of 22k Gold Bird Earrings-The making of my first pair of these 22k gold earrings was featured in the PBS/Nova special, Treasures of the Earth: Metals. The original pair sold and since I had promised them for an Goldsmithing exhibition at A View from the Jeweler’s Bench Ancient Treasures, Contemporary Statements Exhibition February 14 – July 7, 2019, I made a second pair of 22k gold handmade earrings in this Bird Series. I documented the goldsmithing process myself to include as part of the exhibition. They are completely handmade in 22k gold, using ancient goldsmithing techniques that I began learning 30 years ago here at Jewelry Arts Inc in NYC. I fell instantly in love with first metalsmithing and then goldsmithing in particular and never left Jewelry Arts, progressing from student to apprentice, to teacher and finally to Director and Owner. My passion for researching and teaching ancient goldsmithing techniques is all consuming, so I hope you enjoy this peek into my process. To understand the history of gold granulation at our studio: The founder of Jewelry Arts Inc, Robert Kulicke, was fascinated by granulation and other ancient goldsmithing arts like Byzantine enameling and was determined to learn the processes. Starting in the late 1950s, he experimented and drew other like-minded individuals to work together in his home studio. It took Bob and his then wife Jean Stark 24 years to understand and be able to teach granulation in 22k gold and silver. Teaching jewelry making techniques was something Bob was particularly passionate about. He felt that keeping secrets in art was wrong, and he was determined to teach 22k gold granulation and the other jewelry making skills he mastered to all comers from his jewelry studio, which began formally in 1974 in New York City and still continues today as Jewelry Arts Inc. Bob’s students taught others and Jewelry Arts itself has continued to teach generations of students who, in turn, teach others. All modern gold and silver granulation in America can be traced back to Robert Kulicke, who believed art in the form of goldsmithing and silversmithing was for the betterment of us all. We continue today in the spirit of exploration, adding new jewelry making skills and new school projects constantly. Jewelry Arts specializes in one-one instruction, with a team-teaching approach that results in a student-teacher ratio of 4 to 6 to 1. All instructors are highly trained and experienced goldsmiths, silversmiths, jewelers, and teachers. Instructors work with jewelry students at each step of production and are thoroughly equipped to discuss and demonstrate techniques and help solve problems encountered by goldsmithing or silversmithing students at all levels.
