Hands Free Scooter - Gauswheel Spirit Stage 3 - Downhills, Tricks and Mods (Not inline skates)

Footage showing the Hungarian made Gauswheel Spirit Stage 3 with disc brake. It is a manual hands free scooter essentially (non-powered). You mainly kick scoot it but you can also use poles or types of sticks to propel yourself additionally or alternatively.

It came out several years ago and the company had newer versions they introduced in the last year or two including an electric version but there has been no word on if they are still planning on releasing them since being announced some time ago. This product was also known as the Magic Wheel 10 plus years ago from my understanding and originally had the small caster wheel in the back, which decreased the wheelbase on the front end but offered the larger wheel to tackle more challenging surface conditions including going off road. I think this version is better and more safe for downhills as long as the terrain is not too harsh.

It is most enjoyable going downhill or using one-footed and would appeal to inline skaters, skateboard and scooter riders, cyclists and skiers.

The front wheel can be swapped out with different types. It comes with a solid foam wheel like many mobility/disability products, but I show using it with a hard PU skate/scooter wheel as well as with a 100psi max rated air tire wheel (Powerslide inline skate roadrunner and off road air tire). These seem to offer better performance with less rolling resistance than the original (longer glides and more responsive turning).

Mods include the addition of longer and more pronounced shin/knee supports with soft foam exteriors (orange and blue things, pool noodle pieces over pvc sections and longer bolts that screw into the frame in place of the original hardware pieces, etc.)

Also I drilled a small hole into the brake handle and rigged a cut cord of weedeater line, so the brake can be triggered without having to reach down or remove the handle from the body. It is tedious to remove the handle and unwind and rewind the brake cable to put it back when not in use, so this way I never have to remove the brake handle when in standing position, like one normally would. The disc brake is needed for fast downhills, but you can also stradle/sit on the scooter as I demonstrate in the video. This skill takes some practice but allows you easier access to the brake handle when lower set on the scooter.

Lastly, I added a small wheel in the back so you can roll it on its backside uphills as carrying it is tiresome after more than a couple minutes. Originally I had two small wheels, one on each side, so you could pop up the front wheel without fear of scraping the back of the body and also roll forward with the caster wheel off the ground. This would be good for going up small curbs and getting over potholes or bad pavement. Unfortunately I made my axle much too long and it started to bend a bit from the stress of this mod.

I may try a shorter axle at some point so I can have the pair of smaller back side mounted wheels again.
