The Musical Braveheart Of Titanic | Wallace Hartley

Everyone knows about the Titanic, the ship that sank with more than 1500 passengers on board on its maiden voyage.
After the sinking of the ocean liner, a newspaper once reported, "the part played by the orchestra on board the Titanic in her last dreadful moments will rank among the noblest in the annals of heroism at sea."
This line referred to the 8 men who made the band of the ship. The band that famously played as the ship sank, to help lift the spirits of its passengers and keep them calm, as the crew loaded the lifeboats. Wallace Hartley was the leader of the 8 men band of the Titanic who went down with the ship on 15th April 1912.
The final song played by the band is unknown but "Nearer, My God, to Thee" has gained popular acceptance. The opening notes are also inscribed on Hartley's memorial.

Before Titanic's maiden voyage in April 1912, Wallace Hartley was assigned as the bandmaster of the ship. He was at first hesitant to leave his fiancee Maria Robinson, to whom he had recently proposed, but Hartley decided that working on the Titanic would give him possible contacts for future work. He eventually boarded the Titanic and went down with the ship. His body was recovered 10 days after the sinking. His funeral was attended by more than a thousand people. 

All 8 members of the band are regarded as the heroes for their extraordinary bravery in the face of a disaster, but what makes Wallace's story a bit more famous is because of his violin that was recovered after the disaster. Hartley's violin was an expensive gift from his fiancée.

10 days after the sinking, Hartley's body was recovered from the sea. According to several reports, he was found fully dressed and his music case was strapped to his body. Incredibly it was this case that allowed his violin to endure the cold and wet conditions and remain intact.

The violin was handed over to Maria Robinson. After her death, it was passed down to others over the course of time and was out of the public eye for a long time. Before the violin was auctioned in 2013, it went through an extensive authentication process to determine if it was indeed the instrument that Hartley used on the night Titanic sank. After the results of those tests were positive,  it became officially the most valuable artefact from the Titanic sinking after it was sold at 1.7 million dollars.  A person related to the auction commented "I can honestly say I don’t think any other article has made people show as much emotion as this one.”
