Were they the most photographed women of World War I? IWM IWM 693d, released Apr 15 1918 and NTB 347

Jul 30 1917 #OTD In Pervyse, Belgium, Ernest Brooks takes these photos of Elsie Knocker (Baroness de T'Serclaes) and Mairi Chisholm the ("The Madonnas of Pervyse") and their ambulance. In colourized photo, by DB Colour Elsie Knocker stands left and Mairi Chisholm right.

Often photographed with their motorcycle and sidecar. Pair were probably the most photographed women of the war. Mairi Chisholm had met Knocker before #WWI and the 2 competed in motorcycle and sidecar trials. It was Chisholm's talented driving that got them recruited to help in Belgium

Initially working with the Belgian Red Cross they wanted to work closer to the front and so set up their own independent, self-funded, First Aid Post. They worked there until 1918 when both were severely impacted by aerial bombing and gas attacks.

The pair returned to the UK and for the rest of the war served in the newly formed Women's Royal Air Force. Both were decorated by King Albert I of Belgium with the Order of Léopold II, Knights Cross (with palm). Film clip, IWM IWM 693d, released Apr 15 1918 and NTB 347.
